Mmmbop.

Wow, life just super blows today. I will resist the rant.

I was supposed to have a book finished last week for my Sociology War and Aggression Distance class. After chugging through it for most of the afternoon I'm only in 68 pages out of 402.

The knitting might be to blame.

I've decided to take up knitting again. With all of this time I have (what with life just rambling on without me) I'm going to knit scarves. Scarf number one is a nice violet colour and I'm quite impressed with the progress made today.

Violet scarf, 20 stitches
Day One
34 cm long

Yay me.

Today I downloaded the complete works of Hanson off Bittorrent. Jealous? Yeah you should be, nothing puts a person in a better mood than a bunch boys singing about their Elementary School crushes. Suck it.

Beaver chew "R".

Sometimes I get super into songs. I could have heard a song a thousand times while playing through an album and never think twice about it. Just quaint background music. And then one day, whether it be because of the mood I'm in or the way my day went down, I hear a song differently.

This really happens more often than it should. Because then after a couple weeks of listening to this one song on repeat over and over again, I'm kind of sick of it. Until a year or two later I can go back to it again and become obsessed once more.

Here are the lyrics to my current troubled love, Alexisonfire's Control. And don't just ignore the link. Click it. Embrace it. LEARN TO LOVE THE LINKS.

So I did what I always do with new song addictions, I Google them hoping to find out anything and everything about the song. Including a music video.

Oh, I found a music video for Control alright. I found the one.

I need you to read those lyrics. Watch the video. Laugh until you pee. Read the lyrics again. Rinse. And repeat. DO IT FOR ME.

In other news, George Pettit: Robert in six years? You be the judge.

Something like a phenomena.

The BBC had a really interesting article posted today about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visiting Columbia University in New York City.

Okay. There are so many things wrong with this sentence.

Ahmadinejad is known for many things: his support for the development of nuclear technology in Iran, his dislike for current U.S. President George Bush and his absolute dismissal of the Holocaust (he claims it's a myth).

The Canadian government lists Iran as one of the thirteen worst abusers of human rights in the world.

It scares me to think someone so. . . I don't know what word I'm looking for, uneducated maybe, runs a country. A country who has the ability at any time to start wars, create bombs etc.

If the Holocaust thing wasn't a great enough example, here is an exert from the BBC article:
"Asked about executions of homosexuals in Iran, Mr Ahmadinejad replied: "In Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country." Reacting to laughter and jeers from the audience he added: "In Iran we don't have this phenomenon, I don't know who you told this.""
My mind is boggled. How he got the opportunity to speak there (and why he decided to) really just confuses me. And in New York City none the less (for the record, Iran has no direct correlation with 9/11. But it has been said that they supply Iraq insurgents with their weapons).

I really commend the University, it's not just that this conference was out there, it was dangerous. Having well-hated Middle Eastern "dictators" in a place like NYC, well, I just don't see it going over well.

You know you love me.

Anyone who is acquainted with me knows that I like to read. Novels of any sort will do: classics, memoirs, fiction – it doesn’t really matter. Anyone who REALLY knows me will know that I have one literary guilty pleasure: Gossip Girl.

So when I heard they were making it into a movie. I got super-pumped, it would be a great movie, this I knew. But then it was announced that Lindsey Lohan was supposedly playing a main character. This was not okay. But the movie was canceled, and although sad, I knew that was for the best.

And then the Gossip Girl TV show came to light. I wasn't sure how this was going to work. I knew that unlike a movie, a show would have to be fundamentally different from the books. There is no way to tell the story in 42 minute segments once a week.

Anyway, the first episode of the series aired this week. Of course I immediately downloaded and watched it. My thoughts: a very pleasant surprise. Yup, it's different than the books. But man, the writers/creators have done their homework.

Casting is spot on with every single character, it's just how I imagined them. The wardrobe is fantastic and obviously extensively planned and thought out. And the music. Wow. It was perfect, a classic mix of the current hits (Timbaland owns me). Plus, who can resist the fact that Kristen Bell (aka Veronica Mars) is the Gossip Girl, narrating the whole show without ever being seen.

I can't see the series lasting to be honest. It will probably crash and burn like The OC did. And it has that ever present "is-it-an-adult-or-teen-show?" since the whole main cast are teenagers but there is a rampant use of drugs, underage drinking and a surprising amount of sex. DON'T DO IT, KIDS. THOSE PEEPS ARE JUST ACTORS PRETENDING THEIR COOL.

In the end? I give it four glasses of [gin and] juice out of five.

Dark Stanley.

As I was saying to a couple of people, Incubus' Dig and a clip from the Simpson's episode Yokel Chord seem vaguely similar. Maybe it's just me.

Watch both, the song is fantastic and the music/graphics for the Simpson's clip are wicked.

When I'm dying promise compliance and carry my body up over the fence.

I don't know why time insists on playing mind games.

When I lived in Iqaluit, the days were slow but the weeks went by with an almost psychedelic sort of speed. Now, here at MUN, the days race through but it's only our second week of classes.

I guess there isn't really any happy medium.

I'm so daunted by my workload already. Profs keep talking about keeping on top of the readings, but I don't see how it's possible. It took me an hour today to read one chapter for my Crim class. I'm suppose to have four (chapters) read by tomorrow.

Not to mention notes, reserved readings, online documents, Criminal Codes and novels.

I have a text and three novels to cover for my Sociology class alone.

It wasn't this hard last year. I found first year easier than High School because it was so general. But now. I whimper at the thought of completing multiple 15+ paged papers. Or trying to decipher words that I can't even pronounce.

I'm honestly just terrified of failing a class. I haven't so much as failed as quiz since being in MUN. I don't want to progress backwards.

I am staying in the POSC 3531 class though (aka course-of-death). Help me.

Chase the shadows away.

This weekend was completely unexpected. I have no other words to describe it.

Offering up a brief recap, Friday was spent at Meagan's new homestead. Walking in I expected friends and SASF-ers, what I got was strangers and confusion. It all worked out though and soon enough I was brought out of my surprise and brought into nice conversations and Buzz Light Year action figuring.

Saturday I did not move from bed until two. Yup. Two in the afternoon. It was a super nice day so Rob and I went downtown and played tourist. Fresh squeezed orange juice and candy owns. We tried to be cool and hit up mini-golf that night, but our absolute laziness overpowered us and we just stuck around his place. Foosball, si?

And then there was today. Today I tried to accomplish things. I did for the most part and was rewarded with a headache and a nap. Leah and I also decided to try out water aerobics at MUN's aquatic facilities. So glad we did. The time absolutely flew and it was tons of fun (I knew it would be good when the first song that played was Abba's Gimme Gimme Gimme). They have gained lifetime fans and we are promptly returning for another lesson tomorrow.

Which I guess leads to right now. I'm kind of chilling, trying to get my mind to understand that I don't have school tomorrow and it's okay. I do however have to track down the rest of the books I need, as well as decide if I'm going to drop the course-of-death.

This year is different. My little Stephenville family has disbanded to different parts of the island and the world. There is no McWhiteson home. I have a little Leah with me. I'm different too.

I've yet to decipher which parts of what are good and which are bad.

Lions for Scottie.

Couldn't help but notice (and be anything but shocked) that the free download this week on iTunes is Hey Rosetta! who hail from our very own St. John's.

Download and be a pal would ya? Show the rest of Canada we have more to show for than Great Big Sea. Next thing you know it will be our very own superhero.
