In your eyes I see a picture of me all the time.

Sometimes when I’m sad or lonely or in pain or angry or unhappy or depressed or ill, I will watch this video.

I think a little NKOB should be administered at all hospitals.

P.S. “Step One” guy scares the shit out of me.
P.P.S. “Step Five” kind of looks like Holly’s brother.

Hospital music.

Sarah says:
i woke up at two this morning

Sarah says:
and my stomach was exploding and i was throwing up

Sarah says:
i spent all day at the hospital and it seems my appendix wishes out!

Robyn says:
oh noooo!

Robyn says:
so do you have to get 'em out?!

Sarah says:
i had an ultrasound and it isn't inflamed

Sarah says:
so they don't want to do anything yet

Sarah says:
and basically they sent me home and told me to get worse and then come back

Appendicitis
anyone?

Oily silence mocks the legless.

Sometimes I feel like Stephen Harper is the only Canadian who wants us fighting in Afghanistan.

It’s not hard to draw this conclusion when I read newspapers with headlines screaming “HARPER WANTS TO EXTEND MISSION IN AFGHANISTAN” or “HARPER SCARED THAT 2009 PULLOUT WILL HARM NATO”.

Did my Prime Minister just tell the press he was scared?

Maybe it could be the fact that my Poli Sci profs all mutter about a certain foreign president’s hand being stuck up our current PM’s backside playing puppet master.

It could be that all three opposition parties are saying GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE, DUMBASS. The Bloc and NDP parties calling for a pullout of troops right now.

I could look at the 78 headstones of Canadian soldiers and cringe.

I could bite my nails and chalk it up to the fact that this year I will be having not one, but two close relatives serving overseas in this catastrophic “war on terror”.

Every time I start thinking about stuff like this I am reminded of that comment someone left on Matthew Good’s blog once upon a time…

“…if this was another decade, there would be riots in the streets. I guess our rebellious youth are waiting for the revolution to be streamed on Youtube first.”

Acountabilibuddy.

Last night was lovely.

Everyone spent hours trying to figure out the first time we had met each other. And then in turn, when we had became friends.

Leah shared with me her first memory of me (as did I with her) last night.

In grade two I transferred out of a scary and pretentious Pentecostal school and into W.E., a rambunctious and overtly fun public school.

We went to W.E. together for a few years. Leah and I are different ages so we were never in the same class, but when assemblies were held all the grades would go sit in one big lump together in the gym.

Leah says she remembers one time where for some reason everyone’s coats were in a big pile together after one of these assemblies. I was in grade two and she was in grade one and like every girl our age we had one thing in common – a pink coat.

According to Leah’s memory, she remembers putting on her coat only to find that somehow her zippered coat had been transformed into a button one. And who do you think owned that button one?

“I think that’s my coat.” A little seven year-old Sarah came up and said. And we swapped jackets and that was that.

FRIENDSHIP JACKETS.

My first memory of Leah (other than the obvious one) is not until the very first day of grade ten (grade nine for her). I met her at lunch that day.

But the more vivid memory I have was of that recess. Everyone was everywhere like all recesses, especially on the first day of school.

Robert came up to me and asked “Hey, have you seen Leah?” I looked at him and asked “Leah who?” Rob responded with “Leah Burt!”

I stared him down quizzically, “You mean eye patch Leah?”

Ten years difference.

[EDIT(S): (1) There is a tie in the haircut poll! I can’t do both so to all you lurkers out there (and I know you’re out there so don’t try and hide) pay your lurking dues and VOTE! Poll ends tonight at midnight EST, 1:30 in NL, 1:00 in most of Labrador. (2) Just a quick note, did anyone notice that oxen cart my brother got for Christmas in the first picture in the post below? Way to shop there, Mom.]

Today is my brother’s 29th birthday! He has one more year before the weight of adulthood just crushes him into oblivion.

Sucker.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRO! :D

I choo choo choose you.

I bought my Valentines yesterday.

I know that I still have three weeks to go. But when I saw these Valentines I knew they would be the perfect ones to convey my love to you.

Want one?

School was closed today until one. I had one class at two. My road didn’t get plowed until four. I’m sure you can do the math.

The squid and the whale.

I was assaulted by the cold air as I came out of the Chem building this afternoon. Instead of stopping to zip up my coat and pull on my hood, I did it as I scurried out the door and approached the steps.

At the very first step I slipped.

My hands, up in the air from adjusting my hood, began to flail. It was going to be a bad fall as the remaining steps were concrete. It all happened in about one second but I thought about a lot of things in this one second.

Two extremely strong and very welcomed arms encompassed me. Pretty much lifting me into the air, these mysterious arms didn’t so much as make a murmur as he took on the entirety of my body (flailing arms included).

“That was a close one” my mysterious rescuer said from behind me.

I looked back, his arms still around me, and stared at Rescuer’s sunglass covered eyes. “That,” I said “was a close one.”

The comforting moment ended and soon moved into that inevitable awkward one.

I stood straight and brushed the invisible dust from my coat. I gave a smile and Rescuer returned it with a beautiful one of his own.

Taking my minuscule amount of dignity as well as my unreasonably beating heart, I started down the stairs again.

I had walked a few seconds before I realized that I hadn’t thanked Rescuer. I turned around to do so but in true romance novel fashion, he was nowhere to be seen.

I must push my barrow all the day.

I got up this morning on time. Showered, put on my face and clipped my bangs back. I had my standard bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios and the normal glass of orange juice.

Met Robyn and got on the bus (route 15). The bus was late.

The late bus made us decide to skip our first class (which we attend together along with Robert) and sit in the student loft instead. I texted Robert out of courtesy and told him we wouldn’t be coming. He texted back that he wouldn’t be either.

After a half an hour on campus I decided it was enough. I got back on the bus (route 16) and skipped the rest of my classes for the day.

Came home and played the accordion. Lit my Christmas lights and incense.

Happy Martin Luther King Day.

Let me buy you a drank.

Many factors leading to interpersonal attraction have been studied. The most frequently studied are:

1. Physical attractiveness
2. Propinquity
3. Familiarity
4. Similarity
5. Reciprocal liking
6. Reinforcement

Did you really just sum my life up in six points, Wikipedia?

Screw you.

Gobbledygook.

Marland came up to our group in class today and asked “how is everything going over here?” We were a group of three (myself, Allison and another girl named Lesley). Earlier in the class he had asked three peopled groups to disband so everyone could be in a four person cluster.

“Well,” I started “we’re pretty happy together, so we won’t be disbanding. But if you want to stick someone else with us that’s fine.” He looked a little relieved. “Actually, there’s this guy up there,” he pointed behind him to the front of the class “and this is his first day. He seems to be pretty knowledgeable, would you mind if he joined your group?” he asked, adding “If it wouldn’t be awkward.”

We all agreed it would be fine and he gestured for the new guy to come back and join us. We began to see why it could be awkward.

This giant of a man came back, squeezing into one of the lecture seats. I took note of his greying hair and pegged him to be around forty years-old.

“Hi,” he said “I’m Bob.”

Seriously. He’s Bob.

We made introductions and chatted the normal Poli Sci chat when Bob asked something along the lines “so basically we’re running a thirty-six day campaign for a Canadian celebrity?” Happy that he had caught on so fast, we all nodded and made little murmurs of agreement.

Bob chuckled. “That’s great,” he said with a smirk “I’ve run a couple federal campaigns in the past so this should be easy.”

. . .

After exchanging e-mails and agreeing that we would run Celine Dion for the Bloc Quebecois, Bob said “I’ll send you guys some promotional pieces that I’ve worked on. I have a lot of campaign materials and stuff if you guys don’t mind…?” he trailed off.

Oh, Bob. We don’t mind.

This is for my people.

Incase you missed it; Heather was in The Muse this week. She was a really good sport about answering their question (after I yelled “HEATHER WILL DO IT”).

I asked her to autograph it, and she fulfilled that wish too.

Fame much?

The beginning of the end?

Today I took the kids to the park near our house. They love the swings and so do I.

A high of minus thirty-three.

I always feel bad for my brother around this time of year. Maybe it’s because I’m still plump from Christmas festivities. Or the fact that his birthday is at the end of this month. Or it could be all that winter Arctic darkness.

On second thought, it’s definitely just the weather that makes me sympathetic.

I noticed in Darryl’s MSN name today that he had written “I’ve never seen it this cold.” I knew that meant no dice. I checked the weather online; it got to be -58C today in Iqaluit. Feeling a little sympathetic yourself?

Environment Canada issued this cheery warning for the city’s residents:

“A bitterly cold Arctic airmass combined with winds of 30 km/h continue to produce extreme wind chill values between minus 50 and minus 55. No significant change is expected over the next 24 to 36 hours so these extreme wind chill values are expected to persist through Tuesday.

At these extreme wind chill values frostbite on exposed skin may occur in less than 5 minutes.

Come on bartender, just a little more tender.

I got a message yesterday from Dave who IS IN THE SAME CITY AS ME saying that we needed to hang out instantaneously.

Well duh.

I’m pretty sure I drove everyone absolutely nuts this year by commenting every four seconds that I either missed Dave or wished he was here to do whatever we were doing with us. Up until yesterday I hadn’t seen him since the day before I had left for Iqaluit IN APRIL, wtf? He left for British Columbia shortly after and then Uruguay.

So we agreed to meet at Second Cup (aw, S’ville love) for a coffee and loving. When I walked in I immediately saw Joey. And though I knew the guy sitting next to him was Dave, my brain did not compute.

Where was beatnik Dave?

Hippy Dave?

Dressed like a squeegee kid complete with a goatee Dave?

In his place was: MODEL DAVE. “What the hell,” I said while I gave him a giant hug “You’re hot now?” And of course in total old-school-Dave he cheerily replied “I’m a model now!”

He’s a model now.

I told him that I couldn’t believe his whole beatnik image was gone, in its place was a South American tan, hi-lighted hair and sassy clothes. “Do you remember my old hat?” Of course, THE HAT. “I’d still be wearing that if I hadn’t forgotten it in the police car.” Dave is full of stories like this, even more now than before.

We tried to catch up as fast as we could, but between both of our lives we had just too much to cover. So I went over to the boyz’ house tonight and we cooked some loving chicken/rice dish (can you tell I was invited?) to continue the happy chatter.

And of course model poses ensued.

Matt asked me to take a family photo of them. So I did.

Come and see, fall to your knees.

One of the CDs I received for Christmas was Young Galaxy’s self-titled album. I had only heard a couple of their songs but I knew it would be an awesome album because they are on the Arts & Crafts label AND EVERY BAND SIGNED ON THAT LABEL IS GOLD.

Obviously I was not disappointed and another Canadian band made it to my roster of great music.

I’d tell you to go buy the album, but I doubt you’d find it in any store around here. I’d tell you to bitorrent it, but I tried and failed at that. I’d say iTunes it, but you guys have a hard time legally downloading music.

SO! Imagine my happiness when I looked at iTunes today and saw that their free download of the week was my absolute favourite song by Young Galaxy, Outside the City (which for the record, I totally played over and over again while I was leaving St. John’s like a noob, get it? Outside THE city).

It’s free. No excuses. Go download it.
